Dancers and Mental Health: A Conversation We Must Keep Moving

By Jayeeta Banerjee | Founder & Artistic Director, Vivarta Center of Performing Arts

In the world of classical dance, where grace, discipline, and tradition merge seamlessly, we often forget that behind every performance is a human being navigating emotions, stress, and the quiet challenges of mental health. As the founder of Vivarta Center of Performing Arts, I believe it's time we speak openly about the deep connection between dancers and mental wellness.

The Emotional Weight of a Classical Dancer

Classical dance forms like Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, and Kuchipudi demand physical rigor, emotional depth, and years of dedication. We teach our students to embody stories, to express bhava (emotion), and to stay aligned with ancient traditions. But what happens when the mind is tired, when anxiety creeps in, or when a dancer silently struggles with depression or performance pressure?

At Vivarta, we have seen firsthand how mental health in performing artists can shape their growth, resilience, and creative expression. The pressure to be perfect, to meet expectations, and to balance dance with academics, careers, or personal life can often be overwhelming.

Creating a Safe, Inclusive Space for All Dancers

Our center is not just about technique — it is about nurturing mental and emotional well-being. We make it a priority to foster a non-judgmental, supportive environment where dancers of all genders, identities, and backgrounds feel safe to express themselves authentically. Whether you're a seasoned performer or just starting your journey, mental health support for dancers is a conversation we hold with compassion and care.

We emphasize open communication, mindfulness through movement, and collaborative creativity. Sometimes, just knowing you can dance through your emotions, and that your teacher sees you as a whole person — not just a performer — makes a world of difference.

Dance as Healing: Moving Through Mental Health

Classical dance is not only a form of expression; it's therapy. Every rhythm, every mudra, every movement can be a release. We encourage students to explore the healing power of dance — whether it's finding peace in a Meera Bhajan or empowerment in a fiery Satyabhama piece.

At Vivarta, we are actively working to integrate mental health awareness in classical dance training, bringing in conversations about self-care, empathy, and the importance of rest and boundaries.

Moving Forward Together

To all dancers reading this: your mental health matters as much as your posture, your rhythm, or your performance. Seeking help, slowing down, or stepping back does not make you any less of a dancer. It makes you human — and strong.

To parents, gurus, and fellow artists: let us hold space for the emotional journeys of the dancers we nurture. Let us advocate for a dance culture where mental well-being and artistic excellence go hand in hand.

At Vivarta Center of Performing Arts, we are committed to that vision.

Let's keep dancing — with our minds, hearts, and spirits aligned.
