Behind the Rehearsals

By Jayeeta Banerjee | Founder & Artistic Director, Vivarta Center of Performing Arts

There's a certain kind of silence in the studio — not the absence of sound, but the presence of focus.

Each rehearsal unfolds like a conversation between movement and music. The nattuvangam pulses steadily, and with it, the rhythm of our collective breath. Corrections are offered not just in words, but in glances, gestures, pauses.

These sessions are where the performance is born, slowly and quietly, long before the first audience member takes their seat.

It is in the repetition — of steps, of phrases, of intention — that clarity begins to emerge. We return to the same adavu not out of failure, but in search of something more refined, more honest.

We hope that what we've shaped in these long hours resonates on stage — not just as choreography, but as lived experience.
